Problem

Compromised experience, fierce competition

Not all crypto businesses can enable transactions.

To enable transactions, a crypto business needs to have a robust infrastructure in place, including trading platforms, wallets, and payment gateways. If a business does not have the necessary infrastructure, they may not be able to facilitate transactions. Some crypto businesses may choose not to enable transactions for strategic reasons, such as focusing on building partnerships, developing new products, or expanding into new markets.

The existing user experience is not beginner-friendly.

There is a lack of comprehensive education and training materials available to help beginners learn about cryptocurrencies. This can make it difficult for beginners to get started and understand how to use crypto-related services. The cryptocurrency ecosystem is also complex, and there are many technical concepts and jargon that can be difficult for beginners to understand.

Goal

Rapidly fill the market gap

Validate ideas and occupy the market.

We wanted to ensure that our product is successful and profitable before growing it into an ecosystem to reduce the cost of failure. For design, the goal was to quickly build a flexible product flow and light-weight system that can be applied to many experiments.

Impact

Good evidence collected to inform a pivot

Pivot in targeted market and use cases.

After a year of product development and market testing, we learned that there was another business opportunity (digital banking for latin America) worthwhile of pursuing. The previous product paved a good foundation of tech infrastructure and insights to help us turn the steering wheel and kick off another strategic attempt.

Process

Market research, strategize, test and scale
1

Define design strategy with the team

Competitive analysis to find opportunity

By doing competitive analysis, it appeared to us that one of the biggest customer pain point is how user experience is compromised. It is not beginner-friendly, effortful and confusing because of how new and legally complex this space is

Simplicity is key.

We want to make sure we make users' lives easier by giving the right simplicity and support.

‍

*The key wireframes were developed after the user journey was defined. Presenting here to visualize the strategies.

Key value 1: Extra info for clarity &Β transparency

Clear indicators of a user's status and progress, as well as forecasts of their future milestones, have proven helpful for many web2 financial products. With this type of information, users have more confidence even when they are asked to go through a multi-step, effortful process to onboard or transact.

Key value 2: Contextual tips for learning

For users who are new to cryptocurrency, we can provide practical tips to walk them through the field and service. Additionally, by providing reasoning behind each inquiry we ask users to complete, it helps to give them confidence in using our service.

2

Develop ideal user journey

3

Rapid prototyping and testing

Usability test: focused on comprehension

For the consumer-facing app, we needed to make sure it's easy to understand for both usage and security. Since this is a financial service that can bear heavier risks, we need to balance simplicity with the right amount of info and action for legality. I utilized Userbrain (online testing tool) to quickly gather feedback and iron out potential usability problems that could cause confusion or risky behavior.

Product testing: focused on customer value

Since this is a financial service that can bear heavier risks, we need to balance the speed to market with the maturity of the service. For Noba's prototypes, I utilized online testing tools to quickly gather user feedback and iron out potential known usability problems that could cause personal financial risks.

4

Scale with a light-weight design system

Once we defined the domain we were working in, it was clear that this service would be applied to multiple devices, platforms, and used by both end users and cryptocurrency business clients. For that reason, a design system was needed to maintain consistency and efficiency in development.

Outcome

Learning became the biggest return.

Onboarded real clients, learned, and pivoted.

We onboarded numerous clients and started collecting data. After a year of product development and market testing, we learned that there was another business opportunity Β (digital banking for latin America) worthwhile of pursuing. The previous product paved a good foundation of tech infrastructure and insights to help us turn the steering wheel and kick off another strategic attempt.
